AvLights Privacy Policy

AvLights is a Roku screensaver channel that displays real-time USA aviation weather conditions as color-coded dots on FAA sectional charts. This privacy policy explains our data practices.

1. Information We Collect

AvLights does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. The channel does not require account creation, login, or registration of any kind. No names, email addresses, device identifiers, location data, or usage analytics are gathered by AvLights.

2. How the Channel Works

AvLights retrieves publicly available aviation weather reports (METARs) from the FAA Aviation Weather Center API (aviationweather.gov). This request contains only a list of airport identifiers and no user-identifying information. It also retrieves public weather imagery — radar and surface-analysis overlays — from the National Weather Service (ncep.noaa.gov, wpc.ncep.noaa.gov). None of these requests identify you or your device beyond the network-level information any web request necessarily carries.

Weather data is displayed on-screen and discarded; it is not retained between sessions.

3. Files Stored on Your Device

AvLights stores two kinds of data locally on your Roku, both of which stay on the device and are never transmitted anywhere:

• Map images. FAA sectional chart images are downloaded on first use and kept in the device's cache so they do not have to be fetched again. They are public-domain government charts and contain nothing about you.
• Your display preferences. Which maps you have enabled and how long each is shown are saved in the Roku device registry so your settings persist. This is stored on the device only.

Both are removed if you uninstall the channel.

4. Third-Party Services

AvLights contacts only the following services, and none of them receive personal information from us:

• FAA Aviation Weather Center (aviationweather.gov) — aviation weather reports. Operated by the United States government; governed by the FAA Privacy Policy.
• NOAA / National Weather Service (ncep.noaa.gov) — radar and surface-analysis imagery. Also a United States government service.
• GitHub (presumenothing.github.io and github.com) — hosts the sectional chart images the channel downloads. Because your device requests these files directly, GitHub receives the network request, including your IP address, as it would for any website you visit. See the GitHub Privacy Statement.

We do not use any advertising networks, analytics platforms, crash-reporting services, or social media SDKs.

5. Children's Privacy

AvLights is a general-audience channel and is not directed at children under the age of 13. Because we do not collect any personal information from any user, we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The channel complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

6. California Residents (CCPA)

Because AvLights does not collect personal information, there is no personal information to access, delete, or opt out of selling. California residents have no additional rights to exercise under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) with respect to this channel.

7. Data Retention

We retain nothing, because we operate no servers and receive no data from you. Weather reports are held in memory only for the duration of a display cycle. The only data that persists is stored on your own device — the cached chart images and your display preferences described in section 3 — and it is removed when you uninstall the channel.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we ever change our data practices, we will update this page and revise the "Last updated" date at the top. Continued use of AvLights after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
